What is one thing that almost every child has in common? They look at the world with wonder and awe. They see the world as exciting and adventurous. Children will usually believe anything you tell them.
What if we looked at God like Children look at the world? What if we looked at God with wonder and awe? What if we saw God as exciting and adventurous? What if we believed everything the bible told us?
When we “grow up” we believe that we know everything even though we definitely do not. We think we are independent. Sometimes we believe that we have our whole life figured out and that we don’t really need to turn to God to make sure we are doing the right thing. We get caught up in life and forget to stand in awe of our amazing God.
This is why we need to live life with “childlike” faith. I don’t mean that you should throw temper tantrums or act immature. I mean that we need to remember to pause and stand in awe of our God. We have to realize that we are not independent; we are dependent on God. We need to remind ourselves of the excitement we feel when we follow God. We need to remember to follow the bible and model our lives after Christ. We need to look at God the same way we looked at our daddy when we were little. We need to look at Christ and remember that He is our protector and that he holds us responsible for our mistakes.
As children, we were fearless. We thought that we were unstoppable and that we could do anything in the world. As we “grow up,” fear begins to creep in. We stop taking risks. We start worrying. We panic. We feel alone.
We have to remember the time when we were carefree as little girls and boys. We have to lean on the Lord and give Him control of our lives. If you give God control of your life again then you have no reason to fear and no reason to worry.
We become childlike by being humble.
“He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.” Matthew 18:2-5
Jesus isn’t telling us to be childish, he is telling us to humble ourselves. In this scripture Jesus is telling His disciple’s that if they want to enter the kingdom of heaven they need to realize that their status doesn’t matter. We don’t deserve heaven, but we get to go as long as we admit, believe and confess that Jesus is God’s son and that He died on the cross for our sins.
Even though as we “grow up” we gain a little more wisdom and knowledge, we still have to realize that we are the children of God. We have to trust and follow God like a child follows their daddy.
So when life gets crazy and you feel very “grown up,” just pause. Close your eyes and think back to when you were a child. Then realize that you are still God’s little princess or little prince and humble yourself before the Lord.
